VHF & its licence

Communication equipment of the GMDSS (Global Maritime Distress and Safety System) is an important element for safety at sea and search and rescue.

Since 2017, it is compulsory to have a fix VHF on board for sailing further than 6NM offshore. To install this equipment (such as VHF, MF/HF, AIS, EPIRB…) it is required to get a ship station licence allowing you to use the marine frequencies.

The Ship station Licence is delivered:

  • In Monaco, by the “Direction des Plateformes et des Ressources Numériques”.
  • In France, by the “Agence Nationale des Fréquences” (ANFR).

What is the SRC?

The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is a licence required for users of VHF on a French vessel abroad.

In France’s territorial waters, CRR is not required if the user holds a French Pleasure Craft driving licence.

There is no requirement for using this communication equipment onboard a vessel registered in Monaco.

The exam to get the SRC :

Please note that the SCR in English can be obtained in France but we cannot provide the adequate training as we would not be able to register you to the exam in English.

On the other hand, we can provide training for the French version of the SCR, the CRR, which is also recognised internationally. There is no condition of residence, the test is in French and you must be at least 16 years old to register.

A couple of sessions are organised every month in the region. The exam last 30 minutes and is made of multiple-choice questions. Candidates must get the average in each of the 3 series below:

  • Generalities of the mobile maritime service,
  • VHF radiotelephony,
  • Practical use of the DSC VHF (GMDSS).

Registering for the French SRC (CRR) :

To register to the French CRR, candidates must fill in and return the ANFR form found here, and return it by post with the appropriate documents (see list of documents on the form).

After a couple of weeks, you will receive, by Email and post, a 1st letter from the ANFR with a registration number. Please contact us then to organise your training and examination dates (you can preview the examination options by clicking here).

Training to undertake the French SRC (CRR) at YCM:

Training will be delivered in French by La Belle Classe Academy at Yacht Club de Monaco.

There will be 2 training session of 2 hours each:

  • One theoretical session
  • One “practical” session followed by preparation to the exam questions.

Training is offered

  • As individual session for 350€ (+VAT for non-members)
  • As group session for 120€  (+VAT for non-members); a minimum of 3 candidates is required to run a session.
