To apply for an offshore licence, you must :

Be over 16 years of age;
hold a Monegasque or French coastal license.

(If you hold a coastal license from another country, it is possible to request a French equivalence; the CRR may be required. Please contact us for more information);

Be a Monegasque resident to present the Monegasque offshore license. Residence is irrelevant in France (provided you hold a French coastal license).

Our training courses and packages do not include accommodation. However, we work closely with a number of partner hotels in Monaco and Beausoleil that offer accommodation. You can consult the list here.

what will you learn?

Allows you to pilot a motorized pleasure craft in the maritime domain beyond 5 nautical miles from a shelter (6 nautical miles in France), with no limit on the distance from the coast.

  • The offshore license is a theoretical course that takes place in a training room. We cover the following topics
  • Reading a nautical chart, identifying navigation marks and their lights;
  • Plotting and plotting on the chart;
  • Use and correction of magnetic compasses;

dead reckoning (surface, bottom and current courses);

  • The 12th rule for tidal calculations;
    Simple interpretation of a weather map;
    Awareness of electronic navigation aids;
    Knowledge of safety equipment required for semi-offshore and offshore navigation.

(Topics in italics will be discussed in class, but do not lead to specific courses. These subjects are taught independently using the training booklet).

Exams are regularly organized by Affaires Maritimes in Monaco and France.

They last 1h30 and consist of :

  • 2 navigation exercises on a chart ;
  • 1 tide calculation;
  • 5 MCQ questions on the last 3 topics in italics.

Training takes place all year round. Allow :

  • 1 month’s training, with an average of 2 classes of 2.5 hours per week.
  • Approximately 1? months between the start of the course and the exam (subject to exam availability).

Personal commitment and hard work, in addition to the courses, are essential to pass this exam with confidence.

Classes are given in French:

  • In group sessions in the evening from 6pm. Next dates below. Min 3 people.
  • In individual sessions, organized on request and adapted to your schedule.

Courses in English can be organized to prepare for the Monegasque offshore license. Please contact us for more information.

All materials required for the training are provided and included in our rates. It includes :

  • A training booklet;
    SHOM chart 9999 (professional quality flat chart);
  • A Breton protractor ruler;
  • A dry-point compass;
  • A calculator
  • Drawing materials (bic, pencil, eraser, pencil sharpener);
  • A bag to store your equipment.
  • Remember to wear comfortable clothing on board.
